The music for "My First Day At Preschool" plays a large roll in it's success. Kids love music and it was a goal of director John Aguirre to have it incorporated in a way that was fluid and natural. John employed long-time friend, composer Eric Hester, to the task. Eric contributed to the project also as Associate Producer.

Eric speaks about the music, "This was my second foray in childrens music, my first being for "Roundhouse", a series on Nickelodeon (for which Eric was nominated for a Cable Ace Award). Writing on "Roundhouse" was different as we had a live studio band performing the music every week and it was always totally contemporary - the target age was also different as they were targeting the "tweenage" kids, ages 8-12. I am now scoring orchestral music for feature films and all types of different music for television series - writing childrens music is completely different and I find it a challenge. When approaching the music for "My First Day" it was important for me to remember that this was a project for preschool aged kids, but I was dead set on not "following the pack". I wanted to write smart, catchy music that didn't fit in with the ubiquitous "Barney" or "folk" style of childrens music. I didn't want to "dumb down" or patronize the child listener - or the parent, for that matter. Although I wanted to be contemporary, I didn't want to go as far as a Britney Spears type sound, after all, these are preschool aged children. It was important to me to write strong melodies with lyrics that immediately connected with children. In the end, we ended up with songs that, while clearly are still in the childrens genre, are sophisticated and listenable for the child and the parent."

The music for "My First Day At Preschool" has already won accolades: a 2003 Telly Award and recognition for the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Award - twice over.
